On October 19, 2012, Mike Duddy presented for the Maine Medical Association First Fridays Seminar Series. Mike spoke about the Physician Compensation and Productivity Models.

On April 19, 2012, Jennifer Archer filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Maine on behalf of Hans Bruns, a lawful permanent resident residing in Fort Fairfield, Maine, who has been diagnosed with cancer but is unable to receive important medical care and help with the cost of transportation for treatment because he, and hundreds of others like him, have been denied MaineCare because of their alienage or immigration status. Hans is suffering from debilitating pain and, absent treatment, his condition could result in death within six to twelve months. Joined by the Maine Equal Justice Partners and American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, Jennifer challenges the denial of MaineCare as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution.

On March 21, 2012, Terry Duddy and Tim Steigelman presented the session on Advanced Law to the Maine Harbormasters. Topics included state harbor law, federal admiralty law, municipal liability, and the rules for safe navigation.

Harbormasters are municipal officials who administer their local harbors, regulate mooring, and coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure unobstructed navigation in Maine’s harbors. The State of Maine Harbormasters Association is comprised of over 200 harbormasters and deputy harbormasters from throughout the state. John Kelly is teaching a seven week “Trial Practice” course to second and third year law students this summer at the University of Maine Law School. Terry Duddy, John McArdle and Robert Crowley will be guest lecturers during this course.

Following a 2-day trial in Boston Immigration Court, Jennifer Archer wins asylum for her Somali client who was severely persecuted by Islamist extremists in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Jennifer Archer’s client, a Rwandan who was active in the FDU-Inkingi political party, was granted asylum based upon persecution suffered in connection with the most recent presidential elections in Rwanda.

Jennifer Archer successfully obtained political asylum for an individual from Burundi who was persecuted for condemning embezzlement by the Burundian government. The grant of asylum was essential to protect both Ms. Archer’s client and her client’s family from continued persecution at the hands of the Burundian government.

Attorney Tim Norton recently obtained a $2,838,383 judgment on behalf of his client in the Maine Superior Court in a case involving breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.
